An Asheville native, Dr. Killian completed the MD/MBA Joint Degree Program at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Wake Forest University Babcock Graduate School of Management in Winston-Salem, N.C. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, NY and his residency in Ophthalmology at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital and New York University. Dr. Killian is a fifth generation physician whose grandfather practiced medicine in Franklin for many years. Other family members also practiced medicine in Western North Carolina, primarily in Macon and Clay Counties. Dr. Killian will begin seeing patients November 2, 2009 at Asheville Eye Associates’ new office in Franklin, located at 144 Holly Springs Park Drive. Asheville Eye Associates has been serving Western North Carolina since 1961 when Edward K. Isbey, Jr., M.D. began practice as a comprehensive ophthalmologist. In 1986, Dr. Isbey, Jr., and Thomas Beardsley, M.D. merged to form Asheville Eye Associates. In 2005 Asheville Eye Associates merged with Western Carolina Retinal Associates, which was founded in 1981 by Dr. Killian’s father, the late John Killian, M.D., who was the first retinal specialist in WNC.
NOVEMBER 2009 - Dr. Isbey,Jr., Honored by Orchid World Owens Orchids, LLC, announced the registration of an orchid hybrid, Lc Edward K. Isbey, by the International Registration Authority for Orchid Hybrids, sponsored by The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England. Edward k. Isbey, Jr., M.D., received the honor of having an orchid named for him, the highest honor in the orchid world, in recognition of his founding and longtime support of the Western North Carolina Orchid Society (WNCOS). Dr. Isbey, Jr., credits his friends and family, particularly Lester Cody, Mainenance, and Thomas L. Beardsley, M.D. and Edward K. Isbey, III, M.D., for their ongoing support and creativity in helping him pursue his passion for orchids. The 100-member WNCOS was formed in 1962 and is an affiliate of the American Orchid Society. Dr. Isbey, Jr., is especially proud that as of 2008, the WNCOS has become a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization.
NOVEMBER 2009 -AEA welcomes Floy Kampe, OD and Jeffrey Schultz, OD to our Arden office and Asheville offices. Dr. Kampe will see patients at our Arden location and Dr. Shultz will see patients at both the Asheville and Arden locations. Dr. Kampe has been in private optometric practice in Asheville since 2007, when she established Kampe Family Eye Care, O.D. P.A. Dr. Kampe also serves as an Advisory Board Member for Mission Hospital’s Low Vision Center. Dr. Floy Kampe has practiced at Mission Hospital’s Low Vision Center since 2002, where she has provided Low Vision Care to patients of all ages. An Asheville native, Dr. Kampe is a graduate of T.C. Roberson High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, and Doctor of Optometry and Bachelor of Science degrees from Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, PA., where she received the award for Clinical Excellence in Pediatric Internship. Dr. Kampe also earned a Certificate of Achievement from Moore Eye Foundation as Optometry Intern in Low Vision. She and her husband and two children live in South Asheville. She enjoys cooking and photography. Dr. Jeffrey Schultz is also a native of Asheville, and has practiced optometry in Western North Carolina since 2003. He has served as a Low Vision optometrist at Mission Hospital’s Low Vision Center since 2008. In addition to his work with AEA, Dr. Schultz will also continue to practice at Asheville Vision Center O.D. P.A, which he established in 2008. Dr. Schultz attended North Carolina State University, in Raleigh, NC, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. He earned his Doctor of Opotmetry degree from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN, where he received the award for Outstanding Clinician for Fourth Year Students. He also was the recipient of the William Feinbloom Low Vision Award. He has served as a Clinical Examiner for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry from 2007-2009. Dr. Schultz has served in several executive positions for the Mountain District Optometric Society from 2006-2008, including President. Dr. Schultz, his wife and two children live in Asheville. He enjoys coaching youth baseball and softball and spending time with his family.
OCTOBER 2009 – Asheville Eye Associates’ physicians attended the American Academy of Ophthalmology 2009 Joint Meeting with the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology(PAAO) October 24-27. The Academy is the world’s largest association of eye physicians and surgeons – Eye MDs-with more than 27,000 members worldwide. SEPTEMBER 2009 - DASI - Descriptive Audio Service for Visually Impaired – Asheville Eye Associates has sponsored the Descriptive Audio for the Sight Impaired Program at Asheville Community theatre for the 2009-2010 season, which began September 11. The program pays for descriptive audio personnel for the 2009-2010 season’s 23 ACT performances. The service allows blind and visually impaired members of our community the opportunity to enjoy local theater. SEPTEMBER 2009 - Four AEA ophthalmologists were recently recognized as among the Best Doctors in America. W. Zachery Bridges, Jr., MD, Jeffrey B. Goldstein, MD, Edward K. Isbey, III, MD, and Cameron M. Stone, MD have been named among the best doctors in America by Best Doctors, Inc., a survey of over 45,000 doctors in America. The Best Doctors survey has been conducted annually by Boston-based Best Doctors, Inc. since 1992. Thousands of doctors across the country are surveyed each year to identify the physicians that doctors would choose for themselves or their families. Recognized by their peers for their expertise in Ophthalmology, Dr. Bridges, Dr. Goldstein, Dr. Isbey, III and Dr. Stone are among only five percent of physicians in America selected for this prestigious honor. Business North Carolina magazine recently published the names of North Carolina’s Best Doctors in their November edition. Fewer than five percent of all North Carolina physicians made the list. Congratulations to our physicians!
SEPTEMBER 2009 - Asheville Eye Associates’ ophthalmologist and surgeon Thomas L. Beardsley, M.D., was recently quoted in the August 2009 issue of EyeWorld, the medical news magazine of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. In its news feature story “Cataract Severity May Determine Anesthesia Choices” EyeWorld asked leading U.S. cataract surgeons, including Dr. Beardsley of Asheville Eye Associates, to discuss which anesthesia regimens they prefer for cataract surgery. Dr. Beardsley shared his expertise and discussed his use of topical and block anesthesia, and a topical anesthesia combination.
Dr. Beardsley is also featured in the new edition of Cataract Surgery Today: The Best Cataract and Refractive IOL Articles from Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today. The article, entitled “Investigating a TASS Outbreak, “originally appeared in the July 2006 issue of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today.
Under the medical direction of Edward K. Isbey, III, M.D. and Thomas L. Beardsley, M.D., and Shari Schlernitzauer and Denise Fridl, , the clinic is held the first and third Tuesday of each month from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Our first clinics were held Tuesday, June 2 and Tuesday, June 16, 2009. Edward Isbey, III, MD and Thomas Beardsley, M.D. see patients on alternating evenings, with clinical assistance from (2)technicians and (1)business staff member to check-in patients.
