  Retina and Vitreous

The vitreoretinal experts at Asheville Eye Associates specialize in the diagnosis, medical management, and surgical treatment of conditions and diseases that affect the retina and vitreous. The retina is a thin sheet of nerve tissue that lines the inner eye and is where light rays are focused, enabling our brain to see. The center of the retina, known as the macula, is responsible for the fine details of vision, thus allowing us to read and see color. The vitreous, a clear gel-like substance that fills the cavity of the eye, attaches to the retina, macula, and optic nerve.

Many problems can arise within the retina and vitreous that threaten vision and even lead to blindness. Prompt diagnosis and treatment by a vitreoretinal specialist reduces the risk of vision loss from many of these problems. Our retina experts are fully trained ophthalmologists who have extensive additional fellowship training in the medical and surgical management of vitreoretinal diseases.

Common problems managed by our retinal specialists include:

  • Macular degeneration
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal vein/artery occlusion
  • Macular pucker
  • Macular hole
  • Uveitis
  • Inherited retinal diseases and degenerations

Our vitreoretinal care center, Western Carolina Retinal Associates, offers highly specialized, state-of-the-art diagnostic services including:

  • Fluorescein angiography (digital and standard)
